I have been collecting and making
MIDI files since the mid 1990’s. In
this time, I have had several different
computers and several different
sound cards. One thing is certain,
most MIDI files sounded different on
each system.
The system I have now uses a
Soundblaster Audigy card, which
give me the option of using
Soundfonts to replace those
standard GM wavetable sounds.
The soundfont I use is the af340
font. This font give me 89 MB of
wavetable loops and give me a very
realistic sound.
I have also found that speakers
make a big difference in sound
quality. That’s why I advocate the
use of headphone when listening to
MIDI files.
Though MIDI always sounds
different, some files seem to
transgress the limitations of the
General MIDI standard. Check out
the best and the worst of MIDI!
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
For a long time, this tab was at the top of the popular
file list at Mysongbook.com. It had not only the most
hits, but the most 5 star ratings of any tab on the site.
It is a classic, and deserving of the top spot.
Arnold is also an administrator st MSB, and has
collaborated on many other tabs there.
Year Of The Cat - Al Stewart
Sequence by The MSB All Stars
Tabbed by Chuzchy, JBTaylorSr, Nudeedude, 6stringer,
Lazy Guitar & Arnold, this is the highest rated MSB All
Stars tab at MSB. This tab was one of several tabs the
All Stars did, showing what great products come from
collaborative efforts.
Most of the participants are or were moderators at MSB.
American Pie - Don McLean
My biggest hit at MSB, this tab was another
collaborative effort. I started with a basic MIDI file, and
Lazy Guitar rounded up some willing participants to
help me out. Though I received credit for this tab, I
couldn’t have done it without Chuzchy, Lazy Guitar,
and Step In My Shoes.
This tab was the precursor to what was to become the
MSB All Stars.
